Choosing the right tires for your forklift is a critical decision that directly impacts safety, efficiency, and operating costs. The two most common categories are cushion tires and traction tires. This guide explains what they are, how they differ, and how to choose the right one for your operation.

What Are Forklift Cushion Tires?

Cushion tires are solid rubber tires molded onto a metal base band. They are designed primarily for indoor use on smooth, flat surfaces like warehouse floors and loading docks.

Design & Characteristics: Cushion tires are smaller and sit lower to the ground than pneumatic tires. They are available in smooth or treaded versions and are installed using a hydraulic tire press.

Performance: They offer a tighter turning radius, making them ideal for maneuvering in narrow aisles and tight spaces. They also provide quiet, smooth handling.

What Are Forklift Traction Tires?

The term "traction tire" generally refers to a treaded version of a cushion tire. Unlike smooth cushion tires, traction tires feature a tread pattern designed to provide additional grip.

Design & Characteristics: Traction tires have molded lugs or a tread pattern. They are often used on cushion tires to enhance performance on surfaces where smooth tires would slip.

Performance: Their primary function is to provide extra grip on ramps, wet surfaces, painted floors, and outdoor yards.

Cushion vs. Traction (Treaded) Tires

While often used interchangeably, there is a distinction between a smooth cushion tire and a traction (treaded) cushion tire.

Feature Cushion Tire (Smooth) Cushion Traction Tire (Treaded)

Tread Smooth, no tread pattern Features a tread pattern with lugs or grooves

Primary Use Dry, smooth, indoor surfaces Ramps, wet floors, painted surfaces, light outdoor use

Traction Lower traction on slippery surfaces Higher traction, reducing the risk of slippage

Best For Clean, dry warehouses with flat floors Docks, facilities with moisture or spills, areas with gentle slopes

Benefits of Cushion Tires

Lower Cost & Maintenance: They are cheaper to manufacture and easier to maintain than pneumatic tires.

Improved Maneuverability: Their smaller size provides a tighter turning radius, which is a major advantage in confined spaces.

Energy Efficient: They have lower rolling resistance, which can extend battery life in electric forklifts and reduce fuel use in internal combustion models.

Floor Protection: They are less likely to damage smooth concrete floors compared to some other tire types.

Reduced Operator Fatigue: Some advanced cushion tires are designed with features to reduce vibration and minimize operator fatigue.

Drawbacks of Cushion Tires

Limited Traction: Smooth cushion tires offer poor traction on wet, oily, or uneven surfaces.

Not for Rough Terrain: They are not suitable for rough outdoor terrain and offer minimal suspension.

Lower Weight Capacity: They generally cannot withstand as much weight as pneumatic tires.

Tread Patterns for Cushion Traction Tires

Traction tire tread patterns are designed for specific conditions.

Tread Pattern Key Features Ideal Surface

Industrial Deep Lug Features deep grooves for enhanced grip Outdoor use, uneven surfaces, wet or muddy conditions

Bar Grip (NDT) Non-directional tread pattern General-purpose, varied conditions

K Pattern Deep side treads for extra traction Tough indoor or outdoor applications

Y Pattern Deep cross lugs for maximum traction Heavy outdoor applications

Specialized (e.g., BKT MAGLIFT) Robust tread for excellent front and lateral traction Industrial and logistics applications

How to Choose the Right Tire

Choosing between smooth and traction cushion tires depends on your specific operating conditions.

When to Choose Smooth Cushion Tires:

Dry, smooth, flat indoor floors - They provide quiet operation, smooth handling, and increased energy efficiency.

Clean warehouses, distribution centers.

When to Choose Traction (Treaded) Cushion Tires:

Ramps, dock areas, and outdoor yards.

Surfaces with moisture or debris where traction is a concern.

Painted floors where grip is needed.

Tire Size and Identification

Cushion tire sizes are identified by three numbers: Outside Diameter (OD) x Width x Inside Diameter (ID). For example, a 21x7x15 tire has an outside diameter of 21 inches, a width of 7 inches, and an inside diameter of 15 inches.

Maintenance and Replacement

When to Replace: Replace cushion tires when the outside diameter (OD) is 1-1/2" off the original OD. A general rule is to replace tires when wear reaches 50%. Look for wear lines, smooth or flat spots, chunking, tearing, or cracking.

Replacement Sets: Replace tires in sets (both fronts together, both rears together) to ensure stable and safe operation.

Summary

Cushion tires are the standard choice for indoor forklifts, offering excellent maneuverability and low operating costs. For operations that involve ramps, wet floors, or light outdoor use, choosing a traction (treaded) version of a cushion tire is essential to maintain grip and safety.
